How to Glaze Furniture

November 7, 2011 By Taylor 24 Comments

I love that a blog post can jump-start the finishing of a project. This series, Craft Spaces, made me finish my green table that I thought about painting for a long time. So, I finally did. Yay for making goals and actually completing them, even if it is only painting a table :) So here is a little “How To” for your Monday enjoyment.

I really like the look of Glazed Furniture, I think it adds the perfect amount of dullness to a bright paint color. That and I have an issue with too many conflicting wood colors. The key to glazing is finding the right piece of furniture. Make sure there are a lot of nooks and crannies. This table almost doesn’t have enough but I was OK with that. The glaze sticks into the cracks to give it the antiqued look.
This Queen Ann Table was in our house growing up, it was modern in the early 90’s. And I LOVE the lines and the scroll of it. My Mom let me have it when we bought our first house. She is good about getting rid of outdated furniture. And that it was, super solid but just a little outdated…

Supplies:
– sandpaper
– base paint (I used Behr in Granny Smith Apple)
– metallic glaze (I used Martha Stewart in Black Coffee)
– paint brush and foam brush
– an old rag

Directions:

I sometimes had to do this step a few times, I would wipe too much off. I tried it with a damp towel and a dry one, they have different effects so play around with it.

And here she is in lighting up the Craft Room.

Very doable and I love the outcome… perfect for garage sale finds, do you think you can do it?

Color Wheel Clock

July 5, 2011 By Taylor 17 Comments

Have you noticed the “embroidery hoop craze” that is going around? Just search “embroidery hoop” on Pinterest and see what I mean… everything from chalkboards, cork boards, picture frames, and wall art. I thought I’d jump on the Embroidery Hoop bandwagon and I need a clock in the living room, perfect! Fun fact: I went through a small phase in 8th grade when I wanted to collect clocks then I realized they are really noisy at night and got rid of them all.
Meet The Color Wheel Clock.

You can get really creative with this, I actually went to the store for an embroidery hoop and a Clock Kit then came home and decided on the Color Wheel and fabric idea. You can use anything for the “hours” of the clock. I thought about buttons, rocks and abstract numbers. But being an art dork I really loved the Color Wheel.
What You Need:
-Clock Kit (I got mine at Hobby Lobby for $5.99)
– One fat quarter for the background of the clock
-Embroidery Hoop (mine is 10″)
-fabric scraps in 12 different colors
– fusible interfacing

Directions:
Cut your fabric Scraps out and iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric

Trace a 1″ circle on the back of the interfacing and cut it out

I painted the outside of my embroidery hoop gold to match the clock hands and the screw on the hoop

Fit your background fabric on the embroidery hoop. Measure 5″ from side to side and top to bottom to find the exact center and mark it.

Also mark the spots for each hour

Remove the fabric from the hoop and start placing the color wheel circles in place. Do this on your ironing board so you don’t have to move it once everything is in place. Don’t forget to remove the paper on the back of the interfacing. Iron them down.

Read the instructions on that came with your clock… (it was boring enough the first time so I don’t remember the exact steps; but I did take a pic) It looks daunting but it was really simple.

Cut a little “X” in the middle where you marked your center spot

Push the clock back through and assemble the clock.

Trim the excess fabric around the hoop

I think I am addicted to embroidery hoops now, I have already bought three more, good thing they are only about $2 each! What have you made with embroidery hoops that I need to know about? Or even better if you have a picture upload them to the Taylor Made flickr group and show me what ur workin with.

Peacock-ish Painting

May 16, 2011 By Taylor 28 Comments

I have had a blank canvas burning a hole in my closet for some time now. Then I saw this rug from Modern Chic Home. This rug is soooo beautiful and wouldn’t make it a week in my house with my dogs and babies! So I decided it should go on my wall. I changed the colors up a bit and made it look a little more Peacock-ish.
This painting is by no means a creative masterpiece but it added some much needed color to my sad bedroom walls. Does anyone else have oddly shaped rooms and walls that are too tall to paint yourself? This is the longest I have ever slept in a room with white walls :( But it is definitely happier now.
My tips… when painting a pattern that is repetitive like this one, change it up a bit. Make some circles not so round and add a few streaks of un-expected color. It will make it more interesting.

Memory Hall

May 9, 2011 By Taylor 11 Comments

Happy Monday, today, I give you my Memory Hall. My favorite moments of all time. No boring portraits or fake smiles here, all of the pictures I chose are real moments that represent something to me. I can’t think of a better way to give life to the hall in our home. I love the colorful frames on the grey wall.

How I did it:

I started by painting our hall Slate Grey. So much better than a boring white hallway already!

I added a chair rail, painted it white and hung it at eye level.
I collected different sized frames (super cheap from Good Will) and primed them with white
primer. I used the spray paint for plastic because I think the paint sticks better.

Then I painted the frames bright colors.
Printed out my “Favorite Memories” in black and white. This was the hardest part because I had to pick only ten pictures with a good mix, naturally I wanted them all of my babies!

Then I hung the pictures to the wall, with the bottoms resting on the chair rail.

(lovely camoflauged a/c controler?)
I love the way it turned out, now I am reminded of my favorite moments everyday
