DIY Baby Gift Set

September 14, 2017 By Taylor 1 Comment

diy baby gifts

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite sewing projects ever… baby gifts! I love short projects so burp cloths and embellished onesies are the best! My sister just had a baby but she didn’t find out the gender, so all of her clothes were pretty neutral. My niece needed some girly stuff quickly because a girl can’t go too long without a bow :) I also made her some embellished onesies and burp cloths. Look at this sweet girl! She is so happy to be wearing a bow hehe!

It’s no secret that burp cloths are my all time favorite thing to sew for babies… they are so quick but so much cuter than a plain ole’ white burp cloth! I use these cloth diapers HERE for the burp cloths. Then I just use scrap fabric for the center. I sew a hem down both sides of the center and just serge the ends. I wash and press everything before sewing because those cloth diapers really shrink up after the first wash! I usually add a little monogram or name to a few of them… who doesn’t love seeing their new baby name on everything right haha?!

Next I had to make her a few onesies. I have shared this same project a few times (HERE and HERE) and there are tons of ways to embellish onesies, each one is different. You can use colorful onesies (you know the kind with the slightly cheesy embroidered saying on them) or a pack of white onesies. Then I just sew fabric directly on top. If it is a floral fabric I cut around the patten… kind of abstract. I love to do circles, hearts, stars and cars. And I love the ruffled bib look… I monogrammed this one for my niece but I have also just done a single letter in the center.

Lastly I threw in some bows. For the fabric and ribbon bows I just hot glued the bow to fold over elastic. And for the knit bow I literally just sewed a piece of knit fabric together right sides together, flipped it, closed the seam and tied it together! I love that style because you can untie and retie as they grow! I know I would love a little gift like this so hopefully my niece does too! PS… How cute is her room?! Love the peek of her BABY QUILT I made her on the glider!

First Day of School Dress

September 15, 2016 By Taylor Leave a Comment

first day of school dress

The baby of the family started school… kind of. It is just two mornings a week but she loves it, I love it… everyone is happy :) But she definitely needed a First Day of School Dress! My friend owns a Garnett Designs, a monogram and vinyl company (she ships so look her up) and she posted a cute little apple monogram and I just knew that Bee needed it haha! She had it on a white tee which was super cute but for some reason I needed it on stripes.

I looked everywhere for a black and white striped dress that wasn’t a fortune and I couldn’t fine one. I guess that’s the beauty of being able to sew right? I already had this fabric in my stash, even better. I bought it years ago, and even used it for some newborn leggings that I posted about HERE. It’s from Girl Charlee, it’s super comfy but it’s super stretchy almost making it hard to work with, Thankfully I’m not a perfectionist :)

As for the pattern, it’s the Pippa Peplum Top by See Kate Sew with the Dress Add-On. I have made this pattern a ton of times and I LOVE it! Seriously one of my favorite little girl patterns. Sometimes it’s hard to find patterns that are this simple, they all have ruffles or sashes or embellishments… which are great but we aren’t super girly girls over here. The dress add on bundle is so worth it, I have never actually made this as a top, just the dress. This is the “gathered dress” version, I also love the “circle skirt” version… which I made HERE.

I know apples are kind of a “back to school” thing but I’m hoping they can also cross over into fall too right? Let’s say that they so because I just love how this one turned out, crooked stripes and all! I hope everyone has a great year and thank you Mary for the amazing apple monogram!

Girl Clothes

September 7, 2011 By Taylor 7 Comments

Say whaaaat? It’s true, I made some girl clothes a few weeks ago.

Finn’s friend had a birthday and I took it as an opportunity to make girl clothes :) Here is how the conversation went in my head. “Oh your daughter wants a certain toy and will be bored if she has to open clothes? Welp, I have two boys and would like to make a skirt.” I think it’s the perfect situation- I get my two funny, rowdy, crazy boys and I will make all of our girl friends dresses so I won’t have to miss out on that. One thing I will gladly miss out on… the drama-filled, moody, teenage girl years.
I used Dana’s Simple Skirt Pattern for the skirt. Her pattern is for 3-4T so I just subtracted 2 inches or so for a 2T. It was really easy and quick.

For the top, I started with a plain off white t-shirt. Ironed fusible web to a scrap piece of the skirt. Cut out the letter “K” and ironed it in place. Then I hand embroidered around the edge of the letter. Lastly,  I added a little heart just to girl it up even more.

I added a taylormade tag.

And wrapped it up.

Etched Mommy Tree Plate

May 11, 2011 By Taylor 34 Comments

I made this cute little plate for my mom for Mother’s Day. Super simple but I think it was a hit. I made a stencil with my Silhouette, vinyl and transfer paper and used etching cream to etch the glass plate. My mom is the “M” at the bottom of the tree and the initials of her “kids” are in the branches. My husband is an honorary “kid” and of course we couldn’t leave off Clyde and Finn- her grand kids.
Have you used the transfer paper with the vinyl? I was like, what is this roll of white stuff? Then I tried it and it really helps. With a plate like this you have to etch the back of the plate, therefore you need to mirror the image. Also, this is my second time with etching cream (first project here) and just a tip, the bottle says leave it on for 10 mins, I did 30… last time I thought it was too light.
Happy Mother’s Day Mom! xoxo
